The Yemeni Association for Thalassemia and Hereditary Blood Disorders participated, represented by its President Dr. Ahmed Shamsan Al-Muqrami and several members of the Board of Directors, in a workshop held on the afternoon of Friday, June 18, 2021, via the Zoom platform. The workshop aimed to present the International Thalassemia Federation (TIF) evaluation report to all stakeholders, discuss its content, and reach a consensus on the region’s major challenges to formulate a regional strategy ensuring the effectiveness and sustainability of the Arab Thalassemia Forum’s efforts to improve the current situation in each country.
Participants listened to the report outlining the challenges faced by thalassemia services in the region’s countries and engaged in discussions. Engineer Alaa Mohammed Al-Wasabi, representing patients, shared the struggles of Yemeni patients over recent years and the ongoing difficulties due to drug shortages, particularly iron chelation medications. He called for the urgent provision of these essential medicines to preserve patients’ health and reduce complications.
The attendees agreed to compile the most significant challenges and recommendations to present them to TIF and the Arab Forum, aiming to support the association’s efforts to improve patient services and enhance childhood prevention measures against these chronic diseases.
