On Monday, June 14, 2021, the National Blood Transfusion and Research Center, in cooperation with the Yemeni Society for Thalassemia and Hereditary Blood Disorders, organized a special event to mark World Blood Donor Day (June 14) and World Sickle Cell Day (June 19). The event was held under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Taha Al-Mutawakkil, Minister of Public Health and Population, and carried the slogan: “Donate Blood and Let the World Pulse with Life.” It was attended by the Society’s President, Dr. Ahmed Shamsan Al-Maqrami; the Society’s Director General, Mr. Jameel Ali Al-Khayati; the Director of the National Blood Transfusion and Research Center, Dr. Ayman Al-Shehri; along with the center’s medical team.
Earlier, the Society and the Center issued a call to artists, actors, philanthropists, and all compassionate individuals to participate in a large-scale blood donation campaign benefiting patients with thalassemia, hereditary hemolytic anemia, and other conditions. These patients are suffering severely due to the current crisis and the shortage of essential medicines.
The call was answered by notable figures including the esteemed Yemeni artist Ayoub Tarish Al-Abbasi, actor Hamoud Al-Simah, respected broadcaster Abdul Salam Al-Sharihi, as well as several dignitaries and voluntary donors from the community.
The blood donation campaign will continue throughout the week, except on Fridays, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the National Blood Transfusion and Research Center, located south of Al-Sabeen Maternity and Children’s Hospital in Sana’a, as well as at its affiliated branches.
Thousands of patients with thalassemia and hereditary hemolytic anemia face dire and critical conditions due to the unavailability of their necessary medications. The Yemeni Society for Thalassemia and Hereditary Blood Disorders is making significant efforts to alleviate their suffering and that of their families, striving to provide essential medications and free diagnostic testing.
