Sana’a, May 9, 2021 (SABA) – The Yemeni Society for Thalassemia and Hereditary Blood Disorders commemorated World Thalassemia Day on Saturday evening, May 8, by organizing a blood donation campaign in coordination and cooperation with the National Blood Transfusion and Research Center, benefiting patients with thalassemia.
The Society also launched an online campaign on social media platforms to raise awareness about thalassemia and hereditary hemolytic anemia, their severity, methods of prevention, the importance of early premarital screening, and to highlight the suffering of patients.
During the event, Dr. Adnan Al-Hakimi, Technical Director of the National Blood Transfusion and Research Center, praised the exceptional efforts of the Yemeni Society for Thalassemia in serving and caring for patients, as well as the dedication of voluntary blood donors and all those contributing to saving lives through blood donation.
He emphasized that the Center’s continued provision of humanitarian services requires the solidarity and cooperation of all community members to raise awareness about the critical importance of blood donation in saving patients’ lives.
For his part, Mr. Jameel Ali Al-Khayati, General Manager of the Society, expressed sincere gratitude to the management and medical staff of the National Blood Transfusion and Research Center for their significant services to this vulnerable group. He stressed the necessity of collective efforts to establish a culture of voluntary blood donation within all community segments, which helps save the lives of patients dependent on lifelong blood transfusions, as well as other patient groups including cancer and kidney failure patients.
The event concluded with a ceremony honoring the management and staff of the National Blood Transfusion and Research Center, in recognition of their humanitarian efforts in supporting patients with thalassemia and hereditary hemolytic anemia, alleviating complications of these chronic diseases, and their collaboration in the success of the blood donation campaign.
