The Yemeni Society for Thalassemia and Hereditary Blood Diseases Participates in the Second Arab Thalassemia Associations Forum
The Yemeni Society for Thalassemia and Hereditary Blood Diseases participated in the Second Arab Forum of the Arab Thalassemia Associations, organized by the International Thalassemia Federation (TIF), held on Thursday, March 18, 2021, at 3:00 PM Yemen time. The forum focused on discussing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic during the past year and the current year concerning thalassemia patients across all Arab countries, as well as efforts made to address these challenges and other aspects related to improving the patients’ health, social, and psychological well-being.
During the forum, several working papers and presentations were delivered highlighting the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, the UAE, Iraq, along with contributions from Egypt, Yemen, Jordan, Libya, and Morocco.
The participants and patients engaged in discussions and put forward recommendations important for the future of thalassemia and hereditary blood disorder patients. They emphasized the need to unify the efforts of Arab associations and institutions and develop a unified vision aimed at improving patients’ lives and enhancing their access to healthcare, psychological, and social support services. The forum also stressed the importance of strengthening prevention and awareness efforts regarding premarital screening and counseling to reduce the incidence of new births affected by thalassemia and sickle cell anemia.
The forum concluded with expressions of gratitude to all participants and hopes for future meetings under better circumstances for patients.
