On Tuesday, March 19, 2019, Mr. Abdullah Ibrahim Al-Jad’i, Head of the Public Relations and Media Department at the Yemeni Society for Thalassemia and Hereditary Blood Disorders, welcomed students from the National Higher Institute of Medical Sciences at the Society’s headquarters. The visit aimed to introduce the students to the Society and the humanitarian services it provides to patients.
During the visit, the students toured the Thalassemia and Hereditary Blood Disorder Care Center facilities. Mr. Al-Jad’i then delivered an awareness lecture explaining the nature of the disease, its risks, and preventive measures.
Meanwhile, the Society’s Director General spoke about the importance of community awareness in preventing the risks of these chronic diseases and highlighted the heavy financial burden most countries bear in covering medication costs for patients with thalassemia and hereditary blood disorders, which run into thousands of dollars. He also noted that despite limited resources, the Society strives diligently to alleviate the suffering and pain of the patients.
The students expressed their readiness to join the “Friends of Thalassemia Patients” team and committed to organizing awareness campaigns about the dangers of the disease and the importance of premarital screening to prevent its occurrence.
It is noteworthy that the number of patients with thalassemia and hereditary blood disorders continues to rise day by day, and their health condition is steadily deteriorating due to frequent disease relapses caused by the lack of available medications. Patients endure both the bitterness of pain and the hardship of medication shortages.
