The National University, in coordination and cooperation with the National Blood Transfusion and Research Center and the Yemeni Society for Thalassemia and Hereditary Blood Disorders, held today, Sunday, December 27, 2020, an awareness campaign about the risks of thalassemia and hereditary blood disorders and ways to prevent them, attended by a number of academics and students.
Dr. Mukhtar Ismail, Director of the Thalassemia and Hereditary Blood Disorders Care Center, delivered an awareness speech in which he introduced the disease, its causes, methods of transmission, and ways of prevention. He urged attendees to undergo early premarital medical screening to avoid these chronic diseases, expressing his gratitude to the university administration and event organizers for their prominent roles and keen efforts to convey this important message as much as possible.
Dr. Fathi Sharwan, Head of Academic Affairs at the university, emphasized the necessity of raising awareness about the seriousness of these diseases, noting that this cannot be achieved without the unity of all community sectors. He added, “Since its establishment, the university has been committed to community partnership for the public interest.”
Dr. Ahmed Abu Talib, Head of the Nursing Department, highlighted that the reassuring fact is that these diseases can be prevented through premarital screening, unlike other diseases that individuals cannot avoid.
Meanwhile, Dr. Osama Dabwan, Academic Affairs Officer, urged attendees to make awareness their ongoing mission wherever they go and with whomever they meet. Mr. Abdul Quddus Al-Katib, Director of Public Relations, added that a charity bazaar was held today, and a voluntary blood donation campaign for patients with thalassemia and hereditary blood disorders will take place tomorrow, Monday, in the university square.
