Thalassemia Patients Celebrate Their World Day Amidst Shortage of Medicines and Medical Supplies
The Yemeni Society for Thalassemia and Hereditary Blood Disorders organized this morning in Sana’a a speech ceremony and an open day for hundreds of patients on the occasion of World Thalassemia Day, May 8, 2018.
During the event held under the slogan “For a Healthier Childhood,” in cooperation with Magical City, the Society’s President, Dr. Ahmed Shamsan, congratulated thalassemia patients on their global day, wishing them stable health and lasting wellness.
Dr. Shamsan stated that celebrating this occasion comes amid many challenges facing the Society and the Thalassemia Care Center, foremost among them the lack of medicines and medical supplies, and the unavailability of the National Blood Transfusion and Research Center—which is considered the main lifeline for patients—due to missile targeting by the aggression.
He added that the shutdown and loss of readiness of the National Center have serious consequences for thalassemia and hereditary blood disorder patients, the least of which is the reliance on unsafe blood sources that may expose patients to dangerous diseases and viruses.
Dr. Shamsan called on health organizations and agencies to urgently work on restoring the National Center’s readiness and repairing the damages caused by missile attacks to save the lives of thousands of patients.
At the conclusion of the event, the Society’s President, along with several board members, honored the Executive Director of Magical City, Mr. Anis Al-Kamim, and Marketing Manager, Mr. Abdullah Al-Mutrib, in recognition of their cooperation and support for patients at their center.
