Awareness Event Held at Al-Shaheed Al-Ahmar School to Highlight the Dangers of Thalassemia
Al-Shaheed Al-Ahmar School in Sana’a organized an awareness event to educate students about the dangers of thalassemia and other hereditary blood disorders, as well as methods of prevention.
The event, held in collaboration with the Yemeni Society for Thalassemia and Genetic Blood Disorders, featured a school-wide radio broadcast and the distribution of hundreds of educational brochures highlighting the disease, its complications, and its profound impact on individuals, families, communities, and the nation.
During the event, Dr. Mukhtar Ismail, Director of the Thalassemia and Genetic Blood Disorders Care Center, was in attendance. One of the highlights was a heartfelt speech delivered by Anas Nasser, a young thalassemia patient, who spoke about the daily suffering of patients in light of the shortage of essential medicines, medical supplies, and transfusion solutions.
Anas, known as the “Thalassemia Ambassador,” discussed several issues related to the disease, especially the lifelong need for regular blood transfusions, medication, and periodic testing. He also emphasized that much of the patients’ suffering could have been prevented if parents were aware of the importance of premarital testing, praising his own parents for their care and support.
Despite being only eight years old, Anas is an active member of the awareness team at the Care Center, helping to educate others about the risks of the disease and how to prevent it.
At the end of the event — part of the Society’s 11th Annual Awareness Campaign — Dr. Mukhtar Ismail, alongside Mr. Saleh Al-Asimi (Head of Follow-Up and Administrative Board Member) and Mr. Abdullah Ibrahim (Public Relations Officer), honored the school principal Ms. Nabila Abdullah Uqbah and several teachers for organizing and supporting the initiative. للفعالية .
