On June 30, 2019, coinciding with World Sickle Cell Anemia Day on June 19 and under the slogan “Standing with Them Eases Their Pain,” the Yemeni Society for Thalassemia and Hereditary Blood Disorders, in collaboration with the German College of Medical and Technical Sciences and under the sponsorship of the National Blood Transfusion and Research Center, launched an awareness campaign to highlight the risks of thalassemia and sickle cell anemia and ways to prevent them.
The campaign targeted a number of male and female students at the German College, who actively engaged with the initiative, emphasizing the importance of community awareness and collective efforts to avoid contracting such chronic diseases.
Dr. Mukhtar Ismail, Director of the Center for the Care of Thalassemia and Hereditary Blood Disorders, delivered an educational lecture discussing the severity of these diseases, the reasons behind their spread, and preventive measures. He stressed that prevention is achievable only through raising societal awareness about the necessity of early medical screening before marriage, especially among the youth.
Following the awareness campaign, on Monday, July 1, and under the generous sponsorship of the National Blood Transfusion and Research Center, a blood donation campaign was held on the college campus in support of patients with thalassemia and hereditary blood disorders. The campaign witnessed enthusiastic participation from donors. Citizens wishing to contribute are encouraged to visit the National Blood Transfusion and Research Center located next to Al-Sabeen Hospital to donate blood.
