On the morning of Saturday, November 20, 2021, a group of students from the University of Science and Technology visited the Yemeni Society for Thalassemia and Genetic Blood Disorders. They were received by Mr. Ali Abdul Wali Thabet, Head of Public Relations at the Society. During the visit, the students were introduced to the different departments of the therapeutic center and the services provided to patients, in addition to distributing gifts to them.
As part of the visit, Dr. Mukhtar Ismail, Director of the Thalassemia and Genetic Blood Disorders Care Center, delivered an awareness lecture on thalassemia and hereditary blood disorders, their symptoms, the severe complications they pose to patients, their modes of transmission, and methods of prevention. He also addressed the negative cultural practices in some Yemeni communities regarding premarital testing, stressing the importance of enacting a “Premarital Testing Law” as the only effective way to protect future generations from these chronic diseases.
Dr. Ismail further urged all young people intending to marry to undergo early premarital medical testing and to raise awareness among others about the seriousness of these diseases and their impact on individuals, families, and society as a whole.
At the end of the visit, the Society was honored by the university in recognition of its valuable efforts in supporting patients and raising public awareness.
