Scientific Symposium at Al-Mawaddah Hospital Explores Multidisciplinary Approaches to Managing Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Disease
On Thursday, March 5, 2020, Al-Mawaddah Hospital, in coordination and cooperation with the Yemeni Society for Thalassemia and Genetic Blood Disorders, organized a scientific symposium titled:
“Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Disease: How to Deal with Them in Different Specializations?”
The symposium featured two keynote speakers:
- Dr. Ahmed Shamsan Al-Muqrami, President of the Society
- Dr. Arwa Mohammed Al-Rabee, Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology
The event was attended by a number of physicians and specialists from various medical disciplines. It provided an in-depth discussion on the nature of thalassemia and sickle cell disease, their modes of inheritance, their prevalence across Yemen, the suffering endured by patients and their families—especially under the current challenging circumstances—and most importantly, strategies for prevention.
Dr. Ahmed emphasized the urgent need for greater awareness and understanding of how to deal with these chronic conditions. He stressed the importance of premarital screening as both an individual and societal responsibility, stating:
“Premarital medical screening is a necessity that protects our children and future generations from the dangers of hereditary blood disorders. We must all take responsibility to educate others about the risks of this devastating disease.”
Dr. Arwa welcomed attendees and reiterated the critical role of premarital screening in preventing thalassemia and related blood disorders, calling for stronger public awareness and adherence to preventive health practices.
Participants expressed their sincere appreciation to both the hospital and the society for organizing such a valuable event, which enriched their medical knowledge and reinforced the importance of joint efforts to eliminate these diseases. There was collective hope that more such educational activities would continue in the future.
