On Monday, April 8, 2019, an awareness event was held at Al-Nasser University, featuring a variety of informative and engaging segments aimed at extending support to patients with thalassemia and hereditary blood disorders. The event also promoted preventive efforts to combat these chronic diseases.
Dr. Mukhtar Al-Zomor, Head of the Laboratory Department, delivered a keynote speech highlighting the importance of raising awareness about the dangers of thalassemia and hereditary blood disorders. He also emphasized the role of social solidarity, particularly in challenging circumstances like these, and stressed the urgent need to provide essential medications to relieve the suffering of patients. Dr. Al-Zomor also encouraged everyone to donate blood of all types to help secure safe blood supplies and underscored the importance of offering moral support to affected individuals.
Dr. Mukhtar Ismail, Director of the Thalassemia and Hereditary Blood Disorder Patient Care Center, also spoke at the event. He expressed his gratitude to Al-Nasser University, its administration, and students for their consistent efforts in organizing activities that support patients and alleviate their daily struggles. He urged all attendees to undergo early premarital medical testing to prevent new cases of these inherited conditions, which place a heavy burden on patients, families, and the healthcare system. Dr. Ismail expressed his hope for a future where the number of new births with such disorders reaches zero, as has been achieved in other societies.
The voice of children living with thalassemia was powerfully represented by their young ambassador, the talented child Anas Nasser. In his heartfelt speech, he called on everyone to care for patients and undergo early testing before marriage to prevent future generations from enduring the same suffering.
The event was attended by Dr. Ali Al-Dhaifani, Secretary-General of the University; Dr. Abdulkarim Al-Zomor, Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences; Dr. Mukhtar Ismail, Director of the Thalassemia and Hereditary Blood Disorder Patient Care Center; Dr. Mukhtar Al-Zomor, Head of the Laboratory Department at the university; Mr. Abdullah Ibrahim, Head of Public Relations and Media at the Yemeni Society for Thalassemia; and Dr. Asrar Al-Sururi, the event coordinator, in addition to a large number of students from various disciplines.
